Minimally Invasive Surgery

When medication, lifestyle changes and other non-surgical treatments do not relieve symptoms, surgery is generally recommended for a wide variety of conditions. Traditional open surgery requires a large incision and has certain drawbacks, such as a long hospital stay of a week or more, and a lengthy recovery.1,2

Open surgery is rarely used for certain procedures such as gastric bypass to treat obesity, Heller Myotomy to treat the swallowing disorder achalasia. This is due to both the drawbacks of open surgery and the success of minimally invasive procedures such as bariatric (weight loss) surgery.

Fortunately, less invasive options are available to many patients facing, not only gastric bypass surgery, but many other types of procedures. With traditional laparoscopic surgery, doctors operate through smaller incisions, using long-handled instruments and a tiny camera (endoscope) or similar device. But, laparoscopic surgery has inherent limitations, particularly for very complex and delicate operations due to the instruments used.

da Vinci® Surgery

If you are facing surgery, you may be a candidate for a safe, effective and minimally invasive procedure – da Vinci Surgery. Using the most advanced technology available, the da Vinci System enables your doctor to perform this delicate operation with breakthrough vision, precision and control. da Vinci Surgery offers patients many potential benefits over traditional surgery, including:

  • Reduced surgical trauma3
  • Minimal blood loss3
  • Fast recovery3
  • Small incisions for minimal scarring3

da Vinci Surgery also offers patients the potential for a shorter hospital stay when compared to traditional laparoscopic surgery.4

This procedure is performed using the da Vinci Surgical System, a state-of-the-art surgical platform. By overcoming the limits of both traditional open and laparoscopic surgery, da Vinci is changing the experience of surgery for people around the world.

As with any surgery, these benefits cannot be guaranteed since surgery is specific to each patient, condition and procedure. It is important to talk to your doctor about all treatment options, including the risks and benefits. This information can help you make the best decision for your situation.

While clinical studies support the effectiveness of the da Vinci Surgical System when used in minimally invasive surgery, individual results may vary. There are no guarantees of outcome. All surgeries involve the risk of major complications. Before you decide on surgery, discuss treatment options with your doctor. Understanding the risks of each treatment can help you make the best decision for your individual situation. Surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System may not be appropriate for every individual; it may not be applicable to your condition. Always ask your doctor about all treatment options, as well as their risks and benefits. Only your doctor can determine whether da Vinci Surgery is appropriate for your situation.
